The Firearms Control Amendment Bill is out – and South Africa is speaking
Yesterday, 25 November, NEDLAC finally circulated the long-secret draft Firearms Control Amendment Bill to selected stakeholders. Within hours the community erupted. Social media is ablaze with outrage. The Democratic Alliance has issued a strong statement rejecting the Bill outright and petitions are spreading like wildfire.
Thousands of ordinary South Africans – farmers, business owners, mothers, security officers, hunters, sport shooters and concerned citizens – are making it clear: this draconian Bill will not pass unchallenged. These are powerful, positive developments. They prove one thing beyond doubt: the mood of the country has turned.
Yet one voice has been deliberately silenced from the very beginning – from the closed-door planning sessions between the ANC, the Civilian Secretariat for Police and NEDLAC.
That voice is yours – the voice of the South African public. It doesn’t matter whether you own a firearm or never want to own one, whether you support armed response officers or not. If this Bill becomes law it will affect your personal safety and the safety of your family – dramatically, directly and permanently. In a country drowning in violent crime and protected by a police service that is too often absent, broken or compromised, the ANC’s obsession with disarming law-abiding citizens and crippling the private security industry is not about safety. It is about control. Power at all costs.
Safe Citizen and DearSouthAfrica.co.za are formally aligned to make sure your voice is no longer excluded:
- DearSouthAfrica.co.za delivered the overwhelming majority of formal public submissions the last time government tried this in 2021.
- Every comment submitted through DearSouthAfrica.co.za is delivered to Parliament and the relevant department as an individual, official submission – not just another name on a petition.
In the coming days DearSouthAfrica.co.za will open the new, simplified participation process for this Bill. When it opens – use it. Make your voice impossible to ignore. The public is the most powerful voice in this country. It is time we reminded the ANC of that fact.
Your safety. Your voice. Your country.
